NAME: Terra
AGE: Unspecified in Canon. Likely 19.
CANON: Kingdom Hearts
CANON HISTORY: link
CANON PERSONALITY: At heart, Terra is a good guy who means well. He tries his best to make friends and remains very earnest in that respect. Terra’s friends mean the world to him and he would gladly sink in and give in to the darkness if it meant being able to save them from harm. This kind of rationale is the crux of what characterizes Terra as someone who reluctantly must rely on the unsavory from time to time. For underneath his good qualities lies a deep-seated fear of losing, which feeds his obsession with power, giving way to the darkness inside his heart. That is to say, not only a fear of losing in terms of competition or battle, but a fear of losing the important people in his life. Willful and overflowing with emotion to the point where it inhibits his rationality, Terra is easily overtaken by his own pain and desires. This darkness makes Terra easy to manipulate, especially when taking advantage of his friendly, trusting demeanor. By appealing to his weaknesses, several villains were able to trick Terra into helping them when they promised a way to ease his suffering and overcome these faults. His fear of loss leads him to doubt his own inner strength on many occasions.
Even with all of this darkness, Terra tries his best to remain positive, believing in his dreams and the dreams of others, as well as the idea that good will prevail over evil. These are teachings passed down from his master, a truly benevolent man that Terra only kind of takes after. While it builds a very altruistic side of the boy, it also causes him to somewhat resent himself for needing to rely on the darkness.
Though much of the way he acts revolves around his relationship with others, Terra is just as functional a person when by himself. He's analytical and a quick thinker, which helps him deal with the difficulties and complications that come with traveling to other worlds. Strong and confident, he can handle himself in any setting or scenario. He trusts his judgment of both people and situations, and acts accordingly. It's best put that Terra is great at analyzing situations, but fails when it comes to analyzing people. Terra falls to the silver tongue many, many times.
In high stress, dangerous situations, Terra will always do what he deems necessary for himself and others, including sacrificing himself for the well-being of a friend. His obsessions with power plays into these types of situations as well. While he'll be able to see the problem clearly, Terra's ingrained mindset would lead him to think that the only way to excise it would be by destroying it. So while a situation could easily be diffused by a simple talk, Terra would think it more useful to fight first and ask questions later. His power is his strongest point, as well as his largest weakness.
Another gaping flaw of Terra's is his trouble with communicating. While a quick thinker, the things he comes up with aren't always exactly air tight. He'll choose to leave his friends in the dark rather than risk them getting into danger, which might, and usually does end with the same result. It's his inability to be straight with Ventus and Aqua about what was going on with Xehanort that ultimately dooms him. His acknowledgments of his own failings contribute to his inability to share himself with others. Terra loves being with his friends and other people, sharing experiences, and feeling part of a family. It’s simply a shame that he can’t marry his friends and his problems, because as capable as he is on his own physically, emotionally he suffers by himself.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Terra is a highly skilled swordsman, trained for the art of wielding a keyblade his entire life. Terra boasts exceptional strength and is resilient, powerful, and steadfast in combat.
- Terra's signature ability is to summon the keyblade, a long, thick broadsword with the appearance of a bronze key.
- The keyblade can be summoned out of thin air regardless of its location, and can be used to cast a variety of magic spells.
- Fire, ice, lightning, air, earth, light, and darkness are all elemental properties that can be produced by the keyblade. Terra's specialities are earth and darkness, being able to imbue his keyblade with their properties in order to enhance his combat abilities. He can perform this with ice and fire as well, but the elements of earth and darkness tend to be his strong suit.
- Tapping into the darkness, Terra can produce large hands that sprout out of nowhere with the ability to grab and crush most anything in their way.
- Terra can transform his keyblade into a cannon that shoots large, dangerous balls of light.
- Terra can transform his keyblade into a vehicle with an appearance similar to a jet ski that can be used to fly through the air.
- A small patch of armor sits on Terra's shoulder that he can tap, and in conjunction with his keyblade, covers him in a large suit of armor that is able to protect him from much more than what his body would be able to typically withstand.

AU NAME: Terra Mason
AU AGE: 22
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: None!
AU HISTORY:
August 1994: Terra’s Mother and Father argue about his name before his birth.
“We’re naming him ...Terrance.”
“Isn’t that a little...I don’t know, weak? Old fashioned?”
“I thought we agreed on this.”
“We agreed to think about it.”
“Look...It’s important to me that he gets that name…”
“Can’t he have his own name? If not Terrance...What about just...Terra?”
“...Like a rock? Like the earth?”
“Yeah, it’s strong.”
“Strong…”
August 1994: Terra is born to his Father, a businessman, and his Mother, a social worker.
May 1997: Terra’s Mother dies of pneumonia. Terra is too young to understand, and causes great difficulty for his burgeoning childhood as well as his relationship with his Father.
“She didn’t have any real last words, but I think she would’ve meant them for you, kid.”
September 2003: Terra begins having growth spurts much earlier than the other kids in his middle school. Making lots of friends due to his inherent stature and athletic abilities, Terra becomes fairly popular.
January 2004: Terra notices some of the quieter kids getting teased and bullied relentlessly to the point where he steps in and beats up the boy who was bullying them. Terra begins getting in trouble at school for this fairly often, protecting those who were often picked on. Terra’s Father doesn’t understand and begins to treat Terra with despondency and contempt. Slowly, Terra begins to see himself in a different light, and upon taking a few business trips with his Father, quickly realizes that he is not the son he should be. Upon returning from a trip to the other side of the country, Terra becomes just a little bit more reserved. The emotional connection to his Father begins to fade, and Terra starts to struggle to keep himself happy and motivated.
“Why don’t you try picking on me for a change? Go ahead, pick on me! Make fun of me, you jerk, and see what happens!”
October 2007: Terra begins failing school, and learns he must go to summer school. His relationship with his Father completely falls apart as he is repeatedly shamed and verbally abused. Terra begins to resent and feel jealous of his smarter friends, and feels he can no longer relate to them, as well as being too ashamed to ask for help. Resenting school as much as home, Terra feels like he has no safe place.
“Oh, the test...Yeah, um, I passed, totally…”
September 2008: Terra begins high school, and begins avoiding all of his old friends. Some of the older, meaner kids see how tall and adult looking Terra is and begin inviting him to hang out. Desperate to find somewhere to fit in where he won’t be judged, he agrees. Falling into this bad crowd, Terra spends his high school years engaging in all sorts of delinquent activities. Never losing his sense of justice, Terra feels an enormous amount of guilt every time he has to take part in shoplifting, vandalism, or bullying. However, these people accept him, and he feels like he is finally around equals, or at the very least, people he thinks are just like him. He sits idly by as his friends tear things apart, does what they say, and in return he doesn’t have to be around school or home.
“You stole that, didn’t you?”
“With those prices, I’m just playing Robin Hood.”
“Robin Hood, huh...Okay…”
March 2012: Terra begins to doubt his new friends, who start getting into harder and harder drugs, pressuring Terra to try it with them. Feeling sorry for himself, Terra relents; the experience is so terrible that it leaves him looking for a way to get away from these people. He wonders if they actually cared about him, or if he was just the token tall, scary looking guy that helped them do whatever they wanted.
“Just try it, man…”
“Dude, I told you, I don’t...do this stuff. I’m not…”
“Are you in, or are you a narc?”
April 2012: Terra meets with his friends to intimidate someone who stole money from one of them. The person in question turns out to be a young girl, and Terra begins trying to talk his friends out of it. The girl claims over and over that she doesn’t have the money or know anything about it, becoming hysterical and afraid. As Terra goes to step in, she is stabbed in the back by one of his friends who went too far. She falls to the ground and his friends disperse immediately. Terra calls an ambulance, but ultimately flees the scene out of not wanting to get involved, a decision that haunts him for the rest of his life.
“There’s a girl here...She’s hurt, I think she was stabbed…”
May 2012: Terra graduates high school, and begins ghosting his delinquent friends. He apologizes to his Father and attempts to repair their relationship, realizing how out of control he allowed himself to be. Opening up to his Father honestly allows his Father to open up in return about the pain their Mother’s death brought him and the pressure he felt as Terra’s Father. His Father agrees to help Terra pay for college, but the two still have a lot of friction between them, and decide it’s best for Terra to live on campus at university.
“Dad, I don’t want to hate you. I don’t want to have to hate you and be all by myself.”
June 2012: Afraid of one set of friends, and too guilty to speak with the other, Terra finds himself alone again, and with a lot of time on his hands. The time he doesn’t spend blowing off steam in the gym, he sits quietly with American history books. Slowly, he develops a passion for it, and decides that he wants to study the past of his country. He feels it helps him better understand and give perspective to his own life in the present.
“This Teddy Roosevelt guy...Hoo, boy…”
December 2015: Terra, quietly studying and brooding alone in his dorm for three years notices a cute girl hanging out around campus. In an extremely strange, impulsive moment brought on by his progressing loneliness, he asks her on a date. The girl, Minako Arisato (Played by and with permission from player Rayne) turns him down, but continues talking with him. The conversation leads to Minako explaining about her volunteer work, and eventually, she invites Terra to volunteer (platonically) with her sometime. He takes her up on the offer, and ultimately it changes his life. He finds a fulfillment that had been absent from his life for years. Continuing to volunteer, Terra finds himself feeling more at ease with his guilt, and allows him to start forgiving himself as well as ask forgiveness from those he abandoned. He still works with Minako at ReVA to this day.
“H-Hey, who said I meant a date? Maybe I just wanted someone to sit across from and drink coffee…”
August 2016: Terra's Father's company goes under, leaving them both in a spot of financial trouble to the point where Terra needs to pick up a job in order to continue living at school. Valuing his muscle and intimidating stature, he finds a spot for him at a bar fairly easily, after some initial training.
AU PERSONALITY: Terra, much like his canon self, is characterized largely by guilt, frustration, and jealousy. Terra’s most prominent AU personally trait would certainly be his aloofness and general, occasionally sarcastic, detachment from everything around him. This comes from the walls he had started putting around himself ever since he started failing at school. He fears judgement, disrespect, and being an outcast--so his solution is to make himself an outcast so no one else will. This isn’t to say he doesn’t have friends or acquaintances, but Terra has great difficulty investing himself in other people or interpersonal situations around him. A few select individuals have managed to get him especially warm to them, but it still tends to be a frustrating exercise. Much like his canon self, he found himself easily led astray by other people, and now, contrary to that canon self, has closed himself off almost completely out of a fear of getting his life screwed up once more.
Terra’s guilt is also an enormous part of him which greatly influences his decisions and personality. Originally a sprightly, energetic child, Terra’s high school years molded him into a man of self resentment. In contrast to his canon self, which deals with emotional turmoil through rage, this Terra has a much more quiet anger inside of himself. Instead of lashing out, though certainly capable of it, he targets himself with loathing rather than projecting it onto other people. Having been involved in plenty of meager crimes, and one much more major, Terra regularly accosts himself for allowing himself to be that type of person. Terra feels like he doesn’t deserve the good things in his life because of how he hurt other people. This is to say nothing of the fact that he abandoned all of his middle school friends out of a mix of jealousy and the feeling of not being understood. After a while, he has started to feel like he’s ultimately incompatible with most people, and one way or another, it’s going to end up in disaster. Truthfully, it’s Terra’s inability to communicate--as well as his brooding demeanor that allows himself to be ruled by guilt which has caused him so much pain. Not only his bad decisions in terms of his friends, but his academic failings and the shame brought upon him by his Father caused him to hate the person that he is and has been. Now in university, Terra stresses greatly about his grades, and despite studying hard, he has an enormous amount of difficulty keeping his grades up. Terra is desperately trying to succeed, both as a student and as a human being. Like his canon self, he is obsessed with seeking power, but here it is a different kind of power--the power to succeed and live a normal, happy life. Terra wants to feel accepted and successful.
For all of the negativity surrounding him and within his personality, Terra is still a good person at heart. As a child, he stood up for those who couldn’t stand up for themselves, and that sense of justice would be pushed to the side in exchange for a feeling of acceptance amongst a group of his peers. The amount of guilt and angst that comes from this ultimately proves how important this aspect of himself is, and he now looks to remedy it by volunteering and making peace with those he has wronged. Even at his part time job at a bar, he tries to look out for those who may be getting pushed around, and uses his imposing stature to get others to better behave themselves. Helping others gives Terra a sense of peace and fulfillment that manages to calm the storm ever present in his heart, and not unlike his canon self, Terra will not leave behind a friend in need. Not again. Even for all his brooding and isolation, Terra’s few bonds are ones that he treasures greatly. Those who manage to get close to him will find a surprisingly gentle soul looking to help and take care of them whenever they need it. Having felt like he poisoned far too many of his relationships in the past, those that do manage to thrive in the marsh are absolutely precious to him.
