[He crosses his arms with a relieved sort of smile.]

Finally, someone I can actually complain to without sounding totally insane.

[She cocks her head to the side, giving him an appraising sort of look, and breaks into a smile.]

I drink coffee, I work coffee... I mean, you're in college [she's not sure if she's seen him around but he looks the right age], we're all like half caffeine by now.

"Half" is being pretty generous, especially considering my shitty major.

[Folds his arms, grinning slightly.]

You work coffee?

Wow, didn't I bump into the right person...

[Who wouldn't feel lucky bumping into a cute girl that can make good coffee? Terra waves his hand casually.]

Wanna give me your best recommendation and compare notes?

Oh, I think I could do that...

[Her smile widening, she winks.]

But, you have to tell me what your shitty major is. And we're not going to my work because I'll never hear the end of it.

[Terra almost laughs. ok so this is officially bizarre. NOT GONNA COMPLAIN THOUGH, so he smiles back.]

You got it. I'm an American History major at the university--Lots of reading, boring historical accounts, falling asleep at my desk...The works.

[He leans forward towards her a bit, grinning.]

While we're sharing, maybe you wanna tell me your name?

I'm Arlene. Pleased to meet you. [there's a teasing, singsong lilt to her words that makes it very hard not to end the sentence with a tilde]

Watch any plays on campus? I'm majoring in theater.

[He honestly can't tell if she's flirting with him or this is how she always is. Judging from the fact that she's apparently an actress...]

Mm...Can't say I have. I think I'd remember your face if I did. [Wait, is HE flirting now? Reign it in, Terra.]

An artist though! Super impressive. [Let's say they're walking to one of the thousand coffee places that Arlene doesn't work at, at this point.]

Jealous, honestly.

[Little of column A, little of column B... She's definitely doing it on purpose this time. She's pretty sure he's flirting back--she's going to assume that, anyway, because it's what she wants to hear.]

Why be jealous? [she flicks her hair back from her face, giggling lightly] You're poring over old books and taking naps in lecture. Obviously you picked that because it's better than the creative life.

[Arlene don't insult him while you're flirting why are you like this]

[Terra snickers quietly and softly jabs a finger into her shoulder.]

Don't rub salt on the wound, 'kay? [He furrows his brow at her playfully.]

If I had the talent, I would've tried it. I think all of the theatre kids in high school resented me for being twice the size of them. Or were just afraid of me.

[Among other things. It's hard being a mysterious tall muscly freak ok]

Sadly, my set of skills have doomed me to being a talking head on the history channel at best.
Although as far as heads go, I think I'm doing alright. [Gringrin. Is the bravado false? Not even he knows.]

[She pouts, swatting at his hand, and a couple tiny sparks follow the motion.]

At least you'll be a nice head to look at.

[what is subtlety, certainly not something Arlene knows. At least the coffee shop is just ahead... so she can be an embarrassment in a more fitting setting... is that a good thing.

Are they even going to have anything in their size? Not that that's bothered any of the regulars over at work, apparently.]

[Okay she has to be in to him, right? Right?? He has no idea, and all he knows is a cute girl is alluding to the fact that he might be handsome, and he doesn't feel like a total piece of garbage.

...Wait a minute.

As the enter the shop, Terra takes a step ahead of her and turns around to face her head on as they enter the line.]

So, Arlene. [He gives her a curious, teasing kind of look.]

Do you shoot sparks at all of the guys who ask you out for coffee?

I didn't shoot them at you.

[Said with a wink as she holds out her hand and, with a snap of her fingers, conjures a small ball of sparks. It lasts a couple seconds before she lets it fizzle out. The fact that others might be looking apparently doesn't occur to her (actually, she just doesn't care.)]

[Despite hearing about all of the crazy, magical abilities that those with the app had, he never had seen any of them in person. Watching such a blatant demonstration, he can't help but gape a bit. And honestly, the disregard for the people around them is kind of hot.]

Holy shit.

That's metal as hell.

[And after a few seconds at amazement, he cocks his eyebrow.]

Any other magic tricks up your sleeves? You have a captivated audience, here.

[Ooh, wait, better(?) idea. She's done this to herself often enough by accident, it shouldn't be hard to extend it...]

[It's not a question. She's taking his hand anyway, sandwiching it between both of hers. As she draws on her newfound power, she pictures the way she kept ending up when she first got it, charged with static like she'd spent all day shuffling on a carpet in fuzzy socks. She's hoping to pass a similar charge on this time.

Yeah, it's mostly an excuse to touch him.]

[Okay so this day has gone from a 5 to a 9 extraordinarily fast. Complete disbelief as she grabs his hand. Is this...is this going somewh--OUCH. His hand instinctively grips hers tighter as the shock comes in, and after it fades, the hand stays there. He bumped into a cute girl with super powers. Incredible.]

My heart is still beating, right? [There's a bit of wince in his face as he says it, how much he may or may not be exaggerating is kind of a mystery.]

Jesus christ, that was cool. Painful, and not a thousand percent consensual, but very cool. [Honestly, he's a bit jealous. And still holding her hand because. you know. gift horses and their mouths and whatnot]

[If he's not letting go of it she sees no reason to do it either. The faintest hint of chagrin appears in a crease between her brows when he mentions pain, because that actually wasn't the goal, but it quickly goes away. She looks up at him with a little smirk.]

Oh, so I should ask next time?

[Okay he starting to really want to kiss this girl he just met. Gotta cool it, gotta cool it...]

I bet it feels pretty nice once you're used to it...

So you have my permission to keep at it, how about that? [Smiles with one eye closed. Nope. Cooling it is not fucking happening any time soon he just digs the hole deeper. Maybe coffee wasn't the right way to approach this...]

[One eyebrow quirks upward, and she giggles to herself. So that's what he's into, huh?]

There's no taking that back later.

[... except there is, because consent and whatnot, but. You know. Whoops, while they've been standing here flirting shamelessly, the customers in front of them have gotten their orders. "I can take the next customer," the barista calls out, and it's pretty obvious who it's directed at.]

[He starts talking before she's even finished. It's like something that has been weighing heavy on his mind just starts spilling out like blood from a wound.]

Thanks for looking for me. You know Aria, for the past ten years, you're the only person I've actually been willing to share myself with. I don't know if it was because...I just--Only talking online, but...When you moved here, it got kind of scary. Let me just establish the fact that you're an important person in my life, and no matter how I act, I...

[His blue eyes cast downward.]

You always did have way more willpower than me. You and I...You know, we were the same, right? I felt like I was destined to meet you and stick in your life because of that. I'm so proud of you. You made so much of yourself out of such a shitty situation. You took all the negatives and created positives for yourself...And I just...Why couldn't I do the same? Why did I act like that? Why are you here nursing my injury, and why am I the kind of guy who runs into the forest because...

[I hate myself, and I don't forgive myself. Because if I didn't come back maybe I would feel satisfied that I'm in the same place she is.]

I still don't like myself very much. [He starts arching upwards, briefly brushing the moisture away from his eyes and and the hair falling in front of his face. Careful not to make eye contact, he starts trying to stand up.]

We should go home before I get any more dramatic...

[Her voice lowers when he starts. While someone else might huff and find it rude, she knows he's hurting right now, and needs an ear more than a lecture.

But it doesn't stop her from fretting, from casting her gaze downward. He's proud of her? Why? They're not that different and really, not all of those positives she's made are really all that positive.

Dare she say that she's jealous of him and the relationship he has with his father now? A relationship that always felt lost to her? Because she's jealous of that. Jealous of what they have eventually become.]

You're not being dramatic. [She stands along with him, not quite making eye contact with him either. But what she does do is put a firm grip on the wrist of his injured hand and pull it towards her. She doesn't care if he's taller and stronger; she refuses to let him leave until she can properly wrap the wound.]

...And you're not stupid. We all make mistakes in our lives, some worse than others. But if we cant avoid them, what matters is what we do after it happens. And I know you're doing the best you can to make up for those past mistakes. It's not easy, but you're trying hard and that's more admirable than a lot of things.

You're already creating, and have created positives. It's just... it's harder to see things like that about yourself sometimes. And not just you, just... in general.

[She finishes up bandaging his hand, and takes a chance, looking up and smiling. You're a good bean, Terra. You always have been.]

You're important to me, too. That's why I came out here to find you.

[And with that, he'll get a pat on one of his massive shoulders before she starts to climb down and head toward her steed of a dog.]

Plus, you'd probably want me to take care of you if you get pneumonia, right?

Ah, I like working, though. I like the sense of purpose, pouring people refreshing drinks that make them smile and forget their troubles, chatting with customers...

[Turns his head.]

You know, I'm not really sure that I have anything that I really..."do for fun". [Kind of...a depressing realization. What are hobbies?]

[ majima nods - he understands. it's part of the reason he hired terra. he's a good guy. but at the same time, yeah, not having hobbies that's kind of a downer.]

Wanna learn how to play Mahjong? The old ladies at the Asian community center play a mean fuckin' game of Mahjong.

[ there's a pause, cause -- ] Not like this, of course, when we're the size of the damn pieces. But after that.

[Blinkblink.] I've...always been pretty bad at those kinds of games, so I've never really given it a chance before, but...

I'm sure if I had you teaching me, I could be a pro, huh? [Majima always struck him as someone of exceptional skill, anyhow.]

That would be great, actually...I know a few people who would probably be pretty impressed if I could pull that off...[taps his finger against the side of his face.]

I dunno if I could make you pro-status, but definitely likable enough to get passed the occasional sweet from aunties who think you're cute.
